Common Causes of Neck Pain

There are many possible causes of neck pain that can be treated with chiropractic care. One of the most common causes today is "text neck". Text neck occurs when you spend a lot of time looking down at your phone or other smart device, as you do when texting.

When your neck is straight, it experiences about 12 pounds of pressure from your head. The farther forward you lean your head, the more the pressure increases. Inclining your head forward can cause 27 to 60 pounds of pressure. Poor posture is another possible cause. Slouching can cause joint irritation and muscle spasms in your neck. Poor posture when you sleep can also cause pain in your neck.

Trauma or injuries are another cause. This can occur due to whiplash, sports injuries, or falls. Lastly, your neck pain can be caused by an underlying condition. Arthritis, osteoporosis, disc degeneration, pinched nerves, and herniated discs fall into this category.

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Chiropractors focus on treating the underlying cause of your neck pain, rather than treating the symptoms. They will begin by identifying the cause of your pain, and then develop a treatment plan to correct this issue.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic adjustment is often the first line of treatment for neck pain. Misalignments in your spine or neck are a common cause or contributing factor for neck pain. A chiropractor can use gentle thrusts and pressure to correct misalignments. This can increase blood flow, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve nervous system function. It can relieve pain associated with a pinched nerve as well.

Therapeutic Exercises

Therapeutic exercises can also help relieve neck pain. Your chiropractor will decide which exercises will be helpful for you. Then, they will teach you how to do the exercises. Once you know how to do the exercises, you'll continue to do them at home. This can strengthen weak muscles, improve your posture, relieve pain, and increase your range of motion.

Lifestyle Advice

Lifestyle advice is another treatment your chiropractor may recommend. They may suggest that you take frequent breaks at work, change your desk or positioning, or begin an exercise program.
